Multi-button mouse on OS X Client not working

I have an Intellimouse Explorer (5 button mouse). I've installed the Microsoft drivers on OS X (Lion), and the extra buttons work fine with the mouse directly connected. But when I share the mouse from a Win XP Synergy Server, the mouse buttons stop working properly - buttons 4 and 5 seem to duplicate button 3.

So, I guess the problem could be:

Synergy server on Win XP is not sending button 4/5 (unlikely - I can see 'id=4' and 'id=5' events in the debug output)
Synergy client on OS X is not generating button 4/5 (not sure how to check - I have a DEBUG2 level log file, but not sure what to look for buried in everything else!)
OS X is not expecting button 4/5 from a virtual mouse

Any ideas how to get this to work? I can't manage without back/forward in the browser :)
