I had an older version of Synergy working between a Vista server and an XP host. Updated the Vista laptop to a Win7 laptop. Had problems getting Synergy to work, and some searching turned up synergy-foss.org. Synergy 1.4.2 is supposed to work better with Win7, so I installed it. Ran into some problems but I did get it working -- huzzah!

Then -- noticed that Alt-TAB wasn't working on the server. It seemed to cause the current window to lose focus, but didn't switch to anything. Winkey-TAB worked.

Tried killing Synergy on the server -- Alt-TAB immediately started working.

This may be same/similar as http://synergy-foss.org/pm/issues/559 ?

Also: after killing the server, I can't restart it! I originally launched it from the GUI. Now if I try, it immediately blinks back to "Synergy is not running." Help??

To be clear you're not using remote desktop, correct?

Correct. I was typing directly on the laptop (Win7) keyboard and on a USB keyboard.

Hm. I just tried it again, hours later, and the server DID start. Don't think I'd changed anything in the meantime, other than installing Acrobat Pro.

Of course, I'm upstairs now and I can't see the XP system's monitor, but I'm pretty sure it's working. :-)

Even stranger: Alt-TAB is working now. ???

Next morning: Alt-TAB's not working again. Now Winkey-TAB isn't working either. Then other weird stuff started happening -- click on the Windows orb and the Start menu displays, but type any char and it immediately closes. Hit Winkey and the menu pops up and immediately closes. Other strange things too. Kill Synergy and it instantly works right. Then I can't restart Synergy.

Maybe the same thing causes the Alt-TAB and the "can't restart" problem? They seem to go together.

The question has been closed for the following reason "Already a known bug. Please search: http://synergy-foss.org/search/" by nbolton 19 May '11, 04:42

It may depend on what window you have selected. If Synergy is not running in elevated mode (UAC), it may not correctly interact with windows running in elevated mode. Maybe you could try running Synergy as a service.

I tried running the GUI as Administrator (elevated) and it still can't start Synergy.

I installed it as a service but it never started. I started the service, and it started OK -- but as far as I can tell it's not working. The remote (XP) system doesn't show a connection and I can't move my mouse into the XP system's screen.

Ah -- there were 3 Synergy icons in the windows tray (??) so I killed them all and restarted the service. That immediately connected. And... Alt-TAB doesn't work. Winkey-TAB seems to work like TAB. The Start menu seems to be working normally (see comment above).

No ideas?? I planned to leave Synergy running all the time, but I can't live without Alt-TAB forever...

(17 May '11, 09:36) garyfritz

More strangeness: I noticed I couldn't drag to select text in Word. Didn't see this problem in any other applications. I tried stopping the Synergy service, and instantly I could drag in Word. BUT I still couldn't Alt-TAB.

Then I realized even though the service said it was stopped, synergys.exe was still running!? I could still access my remote client system.

And I can't kill the synergys.exe process...

If nobody has any brilliant suggestions to work around these issues, I'm going to have to revert to an older version of Synergy -- or give up on it completely. This isn't workable.

"Already known, please search."

I DID search. I can't find anything that matches this behavior. The closest one I found is http://synergy-foss.org/pm/issues/1068, which was posted SIX YEARS ago, and closed as "invalid, if still a valid bug, post a request on the mailing list."

Can you find an open bug that matches this behavior? I'm not at all sure bug 1068 is the same bug. The behavior isn't quite the same, AND I didn't see this behavior on an earlier pre-synergy-foss version.

It IS a bug, it IS preventing me from using the software, and I DO request that it be opened as a bug.

Ah, so you wanted to reopen the bug? Why didn't you just say so? I've reopened it for you (http://synergy-foss.org/pm/issues/1068) -- feel free to add detail if there's something missing from the report.

Uh, I thought I DID say so. :-) Thanks, I've updated it.
