Error; 2011-05-06T09:04:34 FATAL: failed to start server: cannot bind address: The specified address is not available from the local machine ..libsynergyCServerApp.cpp,616

Server; Windows 7 Pro x64 (SP1) UAC is disabled (and I prefer to keep it so) ALL Synergy executables are set to Run As Administrator Server is installed as Windows Service, and is running/started

Client; Windows XP Pro x86 (SP3) All working fine

Hi, I'm experiencing the above error whenever I attempt to start the server. Having done my research as far as I can find there is only one references for this, in a closed bug report.

I would appreciate help resolving this please and ask that any instructions are give in layman's language (right-brainer).

Many thanks in advance.

That error makes it sound like you are already running a synergy server on that computer. Do you get this error after you start the windows service?

If the client is working fine what is the problem?

Synergy Server (Windows service) is started.

When I d-click the shortcut for qsynergy.exe the GUI opens with "Synergy is not running." When I click start it then flashes back to the same and commits another error message (as above) to the log.

The problem is with the server machine as stated above...

If you're running the synergy server as a service you don't need to run qsynergy.exe separately. The fact that the GUI reports that "Synergy is not running" is a known limitation of the GUI.

The client should work without starting qsynergy.exe

I've installed the Synergy client as Windows service the status for which is "started" on both machines. On the client machine the tray icon says "connecting to xyz."

On the server machine there is no indicator in the tray?

Just checked the Windows service status again on the server machine and it's stopped, won't start, and give this error

Services

Windows could not start the Synergy Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 4.

OK

Event log says;

The Synergy Server service terminated with service-specific error The system cannot open the file..

param1 Synergy Server param2 %%4

Ok, I am wondering why my last comment is missing???

After spending the whole of last evening wading through the mire of Google search I find that error code 4 relates to the configuration file which I understand to be synergy.sgc. This file was not present on my machine, and having done a clean re-install of Synergy I am still unable to find the file anywhere?

I have read the limited documentation on the main Synergy website, including that for configuration, and found it of very little help to me? I'm not the only person having this difficulty going by the number of others with similar issues, scattered across various discussions found on the web (example).

Could somebody please advise me what I should do next, thanks?

Did you make a config file? Is it on the server PC? If not, you can do it manually following the documentation, or you can create one using the GUI. If you have, please edit your question to include the contents of your config file.

Ok, I've now worked out the commenting... Apols and thanks nbolton.

@willichan... I did not make a config file, and having read the documentation I'm still none-the-wiser.

You have to create a config file, either manually, or using the GUI. Did you try configuring using the GUI?

Thanks for the replies gents, though I've found an alternative which was up and running in less than 10 mins.

All the best.

@Oaken Sounds like you've solved your problem. Please could you post the solution as an answer on this thread?
